19th Year a Record Breaker

The 19th edition of the BHP Enchanted Forest attracted a record crowd of 77,000 visitors to the popular seven-week light show that was voted “Saskatoon’s Favourite Winter Event”. This surpasses the previous record of 72,000 set in the 2015/2016 Season. This, despite a bitterly cold spell that lasted a couple of weeks over the Christmas Holiday. New records were also set for the Saskatchewan Blue Cross Push2Play Light Walk that drew just over 5,000 walkers on Opening Night on November 17th and more than 4,000 on closing night January 7th. The BHP Enchanted Forest at Saskatoon’s Forestry Farm Park proved once again to be a major tourist attraction drawing approximately 30,000 visitors from throughout Saskatoon’s tourism marketplace. Many out-of-town visitors combined Christmas shopping, a Blades hockey game, or a RUSH lacrosse game with their tour of the forest. Others were in town visiting friends and family over the holiday season.

The BHP Enchanted Forest is presented by the Saskatoon Zoo Foundation and the Saskatoon City Hospital Foundation. The partner Foundations would like to recognize and thank the outstanding support of BHP, who signed on for another three years as the title sponsor this past November. Fifty-five light display sponsors and partnering media joined BHP in making the event a reality. The Foundations also express their gratitude to the Saskatoon Rotary Club and the Saskatoon Nutana Rotary Club for providing the front gate attendants every evening of the show. Although final figures are not yet available, it is expected the two Foundations will share approximately $250,000 in net proceeds from this year’s Holiday Light Tour.

Next year marks the 20th anniversary of the BHP Enchanted Forest, making the event one of the longest running light shows of its kind in Canada. Display set-up begins October 1st and the show opens November 16th with the first of two Saskatchewan Blue Cross Push2Play Light Walks. November 17th is the first night for drive-thru vehicle traffic. The last drive-thru night is January 5th and the final Push2Play Light Walk will take place on January 6th.

BHP Extends Title Sponsorship

The Saskatoon Zoo Foundation and the Saskatoon City Hospital Foundation have secured the title sponsor for the popular BHP Enchanted Forest for another three years. BHP announced this morning at the Opening Media Conference that they will continue as the Title Sponsor through the 2019/2020 edition of the holiday light tour that annually attracts more than 70,000 visitors and raises more than $200,000 each year for the partner Foundations. The sponsorship extension will take BHP beyond the 20th Anniversary of the light show in 2018/2019. This brings BHP’s financial contribution to the event to one million dollars over ten years. Dawn Woroniuk, Saskatoon Zoo Foundation Executive Director; and Steve Shannon, Saskatoon City Hospital Foundation CEO; expressed their gratitude to Ken Smith, Manager of Corporate Affairs for BHP; for the outstanding commitment made by BHP. The official title of the event will be the “BHP Enchanted Forest”.

This year’s new display was also announced at the media event. “The Grinch in Whoville” sponsored by the Saskatchewan RUSH Lacrosse Club is the latest work of master display builder Rick Steffen. The light display will be officially unveiled at the Light Up the Forest ceremony Thursday evening prior to the Media and Sponsors Preview Night.

SaskTel and the SaskTel Pioneers continue a long running tradition themed “Families to the Forest”. Several Inner-city families will be toured through the BHP Enchanted Forest in buses hosted by the SaskTel Pioneers.

Saskatchewan Blue Cross kicks things off with the Push2Play Light Walk on Friday November 17th and the BHP Enchanted Forest opens to vehicular traffic on Saturday November 18th. The Forest is open for drive-thru traffic every evening 5:30 PM – 10:00 PM through January 6th at the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park. Admission at the gate remains at $10/person or $33/per vehicle with a maximum of seven passengers.
